Roman route to Salamanca , 7 days

The walled city of Avila, the Gredos Mountain Range, ancient holm oak pastures and universal Salamanca.

  • Spectacular cycling journey in "off the beaten track" Spain. Explore the medieval walled city of Avila, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Enjoy carefully chosen country roads along the foothills of the Gredos Mountain Range Nature Reserve. Cycle through ancient forests of sweet chestnut and oak into villages lost in time. And finally, join the 2000 yr old Roman route used then to transport silver from the mines in the north, cycling amongst staggeringly beautiful countryside where free range pigs enjoy a diet of acorns under the shade of ancient holm oaks. Finish off with a visit to another Unesco World Heritage Site: Salamanca.

Itinerary description

  • Day 1 Arrival to the historic walled city of Avila and a chance to visit its emblematic 11th century City Walls, medieval Cathedral and convent, chapels, and museums.

  • Day 2 Bicycle and equipment hand-over. Transfer by car to the starting point, on the foothills of the impressive Gredos Mountains. Follow the river Tormes downstream along quiet country roads, stopping to swim under a roman bridge and admiring the views of the rugged mountains above. (breakfast included).
    42 km. Accumulated climb: 392m.

  • Day 3 Gentle cycle along rural countryside to the town of Barco de Avila, a perfect place for lunch. In the afternoon, continue on into the province of Salamanca amongst lovely chestnut and oak woodland and into the very beautiful village of Candelario where you will spend the night (breakfast included).

  • Day 4 Cycle down into nearby Béjar to visit its Romanesque churches, XVIth century Palace and XIVth century Convent. From here you connect with the "Via de la Plata", a Roman highway used to transport silver from the northern mines to Seville, in the south. Today this roman highway is a main artery of the famous Camino de Santiago from the south of Spain. (breakfast included).

  • Day 5 Another day following the "Via de la Plata" amongst pastures dotted with ancient holm oak trees. We are now entering the plains of Castilla to the north as we approach Salamanca. We stop overnight at the small village of Morille (breakfast and picnic lunch included).
    45 Km. Accumulated climb: 593m.

  • Day 6 One last cycling day to reach the stunning city of Salamanca, now declared a Unesco World Heritage site. Time to settle into your last hotel and enjoy the many sights and monuments and soak up the history of this city (breakfast included).

  • Day 7 Return from Salamanca (breakfast included).

  • How do I get to the Starting Point? There are trains from Madrid to Avila every couple of hours (8€, takes 1hr 30mins)
    How do I get back to Madrid? There are trains from Salamanca to Madrid every couple of hours (20€, takes 2hrs and 45min)
